Doomsday approaches! Could the prophecies
be true? No matter what your personal views on the subject are, one cannot ignore the hype that this theory has created. It is widely believed that it
was the Mayans alone who predicted set date, however, there are a handful of
other theories which also claim that the end of the world will be in 2012.
There is a theory which forecasts that the
planet’s crust and mantle will suddenly shift,
spinning around Earth's liquid-iron outer core like an orange's peel spinning
around its fleshy fruit. Another mentions how Planet X, also know as Nibiru,
will find itself headed towards Earth into what could result in a direct
collision. Some others have even claimed that it will be our friendly star, the
Sun, that dooms us all.
Even though scientists all around the
world have denied most of these notions, one cannot help but wonder.
Personally, I don’t believe any of these predictions, but they still make me
consider a lot of things. What if it was true that we had less than a year to
live? If we knew this was going to happen with certainty, we would treasure
every day like no other. What would you do if you knew that in less than a year
the world would end? Would you still get up at 9a.m. to go to Ms Clinnins
class? Furthermore, would you choose to still remain at Tech? Would you go to
your family or would you take time to travel? Do you think you’d be depressed
or would you find the strength to accept the fact that the world was coming to
an end?
P.S. If it where to end, Mr Elliot, it would be with a bang, not a whimper.
The known prediction that the world end being in December this year is something that I do not take part in believing whatsoever. Although, I do not believe in it, it also make me wonder, what if it does happen? If it was true, and I had less than a year to live, I would make a lot of changes to my current life. I wouldn't want to do crazy things like many people might choose to do, I would want to return to my old life in Cincinnati, OH. I would want to be with my family and my friends. I also love my job back at home, which is at a sports bar, I would want to return there and live the remainder of my life in normalacy. The simple things I enjoy like going boating and spending time with my family. I would be depressed that the world was ending, but I would also convince myself to not think about it so it would not ruin the rest of the time I had on earth.
ReplyDeleteEven though I think the Mayan calendar is just a practical joke played on us by some bored calendar makers from way back when, it definitely makes you think, what if. I know I would definitely not stay at Virginia Tech, why prepare for a future that isn’t going to happen? I would, however, keep in touch with people from Tech and try to see them when I could, and I would try to spend time with my other friends and my family. My next actions would depend on how the world was going to end. If an asteroid was going to be the cause of our dismal fate I would happily sit in a hammock watching the waves crashing on a white sand beach with whoever would like to join me. I’d also try to get as much snowboarding and wakeboarding in as I could again with anyone who wanted to come with me. I would try my best not to view it as my last year to live, but a year to do as much living as I can. No longer would I want to deal with the constant stresses that our society puts on us or do things that didn’t make me smile. However, if our fate was due to something like the zombie apocalypse instead of some overwhelming cosmic force then my actions would be entirely different. I would begin to prepare, train, and fortify, making my farm as safe as Fort Knox and as well-equipped as a military base. Of course all are welcome to join me, as we slowly rebuild from the ruins of our civilization and go Chuck Norris on their zombie asses.
ReplyDeleteIf I knew without a single doubt in my mind that the world was going to end I definitely would not be wasting my time and money on being here at Tech. I would probably go home right now to my family and girlfriend and spend every day with them. I have always said that if the world ended this year I would be extremely pissed for lack of a better word, because I spent my whole life in school and that would just suck.
ReplyDeleteHaha PS I like what Will said about the Zombie Apocalypse.

ReplyDeleteIt is hard to ignore the 2012 conspiracy, but I honestly don't think the world will end in a bang. If something does go wrong I think it will be more like the movie, "The Day After Tomorrow." People will survive but it will ultimately be survival of the fittest. If I knew the world would end in 2012 no matter what I would probably spend my life at home, like Katie said; just taking it one day at a time. Spending each day with my family and friends doing the little things in life that I love the most; like going to the beach or on my boat, building a bonfire, or even just hanging out with he people I love. Meanwhile I would build an underground bunker out in the mountains with supplies to last over a year. Then the last day of 2012 bring my family and closest loved ones there to hopefully if we had the chance, repopulate the new planet.
ReplyDeleteI personally would drop out of college and live my life like no other. I would travel the world and experience things I never have. I would also spend time with my family and friends. Overall I would make sure to live my life to the fullest and get everything I could out of my last year on earth.

ReplyDeleteIf the world was to end within the present year I personally would not stay at Virginia Tech. That is not to say I don’t like things here but I would rather spend the final few days of existence with my family and friends back home. It would be tough to leave all the friends I have made here at Virginia Tech knowing that I would never see them again. Ultimately my family is top on my list above all else so I would chose to be with them. Honestly everything we do at school is to better ourselves for the future, but if there is no future for us there is no point in staying.
ReplyDeleteI find it interesting that even though the supposed prophecy says nothing about and end to the world, but the fact that society jumps to deduce a supposed doomsday, it becomes true. Not to get airy fairy but the prophecy simply states a universal change. Theories are theories. Scientists also thought that the alignment of the planets would cause a gravitational force so strong that life would be no more. Time after time we buy into these catastrophic ideas because we enjoy the idea of an interruption in the pattern of our lives. If i did believe that the world would end in less than a year I would live my life as I do now, with the exception of visiting my family more. I would remain at tech unless certain conditions made it impossible.
ReplyDeleteI think it is interesting that you point out that “the prophecy simply states a universal change” not the end of the world. I personally do not agree with the property. As you stated “theories are theories”. Such theories have already been proposed in the past, perhaps you remember Planet X, which never happened. I do not think that scientist have enough evidence to even make their theories substantial. For people who see global warming and rising temperatures as a sign of the world’s end, consider our history. We do not have history dating far enough back to tell whether this is part of cycle that the Earth goes through or if it something we have caused. An perhaps we will all die out, maybe there will be another ice age, and maybe Pangaea will reform. We don’t know.
DeleteTherefore I think all the craze surrounding the 2012 doomsday is speculation and would continue more normal lifestyle unless real evidence came to the forefront.
I think that I would finish the semester at Virginia Tech. However, I would do the minimal amount of work in order to stop from failing out of school. After this semester was over I would spend all the money that I have earned. I would spend time with my friends and family and have as much fun as possible. I would not be upset that the world was going to end, I would just make sure that I did as much as possible before the world ended.
ReplyDeleteI don't believe any of the outrageous predictions about the end of the world, but if I knew the world was going to end I would definitely live my last few months to the fullest. I don't think I would stay at VT, I would go home and spend time with my family and friends and bring closure to any unresolved situations. I would do everything that I've always wanted to do without giving too much thought to the consequences and I would spend my last days comfortably with no regrets.
ReplyDeleteTo me the whole situation about the world ending is non-sense. Like it was said in the blog post most of the theories that were brought to the table were disproved and are not of any real validity. But in the hypothetical situation that the world ends in 2012, my life would be much different now. For starters, I would most certainly not be wasting my time and money getting educated at Tech. Since I wouldn’t even be able to graduate and use any of the knowledge from college, I would just skip out on college and have fun. So since I wouldn’t be at college, I would probably be vacationing for the entire year. Not so much traveling the world, but just pick a spot somewhere warm in the tropics where I could go fishing every day and just enjoy the rest of my life. I wouldn’t want to travel because if everyone knew the world was going to end then my guess would be that many people would be traveling, and that would get annoying. That is probably what I would do in the event of knowing when the world is going to end. And of course I would also scratch some things off the bucket list.
ReplyDeleteI don't believe in the whole world ending at the end of the year thing, but I can't help to still worry a little. I still wonder if maybe, just maybe, it was true and that we are all wasting our time still being all serious when we are going to die at the end of the year. If I knew for sure the world was ending, I would leave Virginia Tech and go back home to Virginia Beach. Of course I would still keep in contact and visit some of my VT friends from time to time, but I would want to spend more time with my family and pets. I would be spending time with my horse every single day, because he i basically my whole life. I would also spend time with my family and just try to make up for the time I gave up on chances to spend time with them before. My friends and I would definitively be doing stupid/crazy things, because that's just who we are especially if we knew this is our last chance to ever doing stuff like that.
